What can I expect on our first meeting?

We like to take a full history over the phone to assess your likely suitability and save you the expense of a wasted journey. We follow-up in clinic with a physical examination to confirm the diagnosis and explain the process. If suitable, and if you agree, we will do the first treatment there and then. This will likely take no more than 20 minutes. The shockwave itself lasts about three minutes.You can drive home afterwards

What will I feel during and after treatment?

After treatment it is common to feel much improved.It may take up to four treatments to feel as though you are on top of the pain you originally came with. Treatment itself can be a little sore. This is normal. Treatment lasts around three minutes. After treatment you may experience redness, swelling bruising or numbness around the area, although this is very rare in our experisnce. This can last up to a week and is considered a normal effect. There is a very small risk of ligament or tendon rupture, however, as you will see from the reading material, shockwave is proven to be a safe treatment.

What can I expect the long term outcome to be?

Tendons and plantar fascia are notoriously difficult to treat. The aim of shockwave is to reduce or abolish the pain so that you can begin loading and strengthening exercises, which is the thing that keeps the improvement going when you are away from clinic, and actually helps to manage the tissues long term. If you do not do the exercises and follow the advice, your recovery will be slower!Full recovery from a tendon issue and back to training is usually around three months, during which you may need the occasional treatment as your training load increases.

What should I wear?

Please bring shorts if we are treating your hip. Ladies please wear a  vest top if we are treating your shoulder.Feel free to bring a chaperone.

Who may not be suitable for shockwave?

Shockwave is non-invasive and so is suitable for all sorts of soft tissue issue problems, however it may not be suitable if you:Are pregnantAre under 18Have bone cancerHave a pacemakerHave a joint replacement directly under the areaSuffer from a blood clotting disorder or are on anticoagulantsHave had a steroid injection in the area in the past 3 months
