Shockwave for Knee Pain

How Shockwave Therapy Reduces Inflammation and Stimulates Healing in the  Knee

There is evidence than shockwave (Extracorporeal Radial Shockwave Therapy) can be helpful in the  management of both osteoarthritis and tendinits (tendinopathy) of the knee.

Tendinitis is pain from the patella tendon beneath the kneecap (patella).

Both are caused by chronic inflammation and we know that shockwave is very helpful in this environment

we are not entirely sure why it works for arthritis but in tendinopathy (tendinitis) it causes biological changes within the tendon by activating the growth and repair cells within it

Examination and Treatment-What To Expect

Your Chartered Physiotherapist will undertake a full examination and discuss treatment options with you. If radial shockwave therapy is appropriate and if you agree, you will have your first treatment there and then. Treatment will only take about 3-4 minutes.

You will be given exercises to strengthen the tendon specifically or in the case of arthritis, to strengthen the knee. Shockwave does not cure arthritis. It can reduce the pain so that activity becomes less painful

It commonly takes 2-3 sessions to feel the real benefit of radial shockwave in the knee
